It is common knowledge amongst my friends that I laugh a lot. However, it had been a long time that I read something to make me laugh out loud until I came across a blog post with the title “50 reasons not to date a graphic designer”. Silvia the blogger aptly describes graphic designers like some odd creatures that read comic books, spend their day brainstorming, would taste anything so long the packaging is good, and daydream about the day that no one will change their own designs. And so it is.

I am a great fun of Asterix the Gull, I love drinking coffee while imagining new designs, I am a big fun of food tasting and cooking, and I sure do look forward to the day my designs will remain intact. That is I am a graphic designer.

That being said, I think Silvia was thinking of me when writing rule no 35. I absolutely can’t go into a restaurant without secretly commenting on the menu design as I have a passion for menus. For me, they represent everything that makes me happy in a single design. I totally agree with Bryony and Armin in the Art of the Menu when they say

“Menus are big canvases, much like the album covers we mourn with such despair. Menus are tactile, allowing designers to explore materials and finishes. At a restaurant, the menu is the ultimate ambassador for the establishment’s identity: Logo front and center on the cover. A good menu adds to the overall brand experience.  But who are we kidding? A good menu should make you hungry”.Oddly enough though, as I have come to notice we rarely praise a good menu. We probably simply enjoy the fact that we can browse through the options without being distracted by silly fonts, and thus we don’t feel the need to further comment. But if you think about it, menus are the meeting point of widely celebrated design practices.
